What you need to know

Types

  • International adoption - adopting from another country
  • Private adoption - usually adopting a child through a private agency in the U.S.
  • Foster care adoption - adopting a child from the U.S. foster care system

Tip

If you want to adopt a child with no older siblings, foster care adoption may not be the best path for you. A good place to explore private adoption would be through the Nebraska Adoption Agency Association.

 Foster Care Adoption

  • If children cannot return to their parents and the parents' rights have been terminated, the child becomes available for adoption.
  • Foster care adoption typically has less upfront cost than private or international adoption but is a time commitment.
  • You'll have support available to you when you adopt from foster care, such as services for parents and children, access to community resources like respite care and more.
