In an extraordinary life event, you may call 911 for an immediate response from a medical professional, law enforcement or other first responders to bring you to safety. 988 is not 911. A mental health life event is different.
988 is the nationwide three-digit number for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. It connects anyone in the United States to free, confidential emotional support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Calling, texting, or chatting 988 links you with trained crisis counselors who can respond to thoughts of suicide, mental health concerns, substance use issues, or any emotional distress.
In Fiscal Year 25, the Nebraska 988 Call Center received over 35,000 contacts. Only 324 contacts resulted in a mobile crisis response activation. This means that over 99% of the time, speaking with a crisis counselor via 988 was able to divert a mobile crisis response or an emergency room visit.
