Medicaid renewals are sometimes also called redeterminations or recertifications. A Medicaid renewal is a check-in to make sure that a member still qualifies for health benefits through Nebraska Medicaid.
There are many different things that can change whether someone qualifies for Medicaid and what category of Medicaid they qualify for. When it's almost time for a member's renewal, DHHS reviews information like:
- Income
- Home address
- Household size
- And more
If DHHS doesn't have enough information to see if someone still qualifies, we will send a request asking for more information.
2027 Renewal Changes for Medicaid Expansion Members
Starting in 2027, renewals for adults in the Medicaid expansion group will be scheduled for
every 6 months instead of every 12 months. This change only applies to members who are in the Medicaid expansion group.
For New Applicants
For new applicants applying on or after January 1, 2027, who are eligible in the expansion group:
- Their very first renewal will be scheduled for 6 months after their coverage begins.
- After that, renewals will continue every 6 months.
For Existing Members
For people who are already on Medicaid who are in the expansion group:
-
Their next upcoming renewal date stays the same. DHHS will not change the date they already have scheduled.
- The 6-month rule starts in March 2027 for existing Medicaid expansion members. If a member's currently scheduled renewal is in March 2027 or later, their
next renewal after that will be set for 6 months later.
Also, for members who already have Medicaid in a different Medicaid category and then transition into the Medicaid expansion group after January 1, theirnext renewal will be set for 6 months later.
Exemption
Members of federally recognized Native American tribes, Urban Indians, California Indians, and people who receive services through the Indian Health Service (IHS) are exempt from this change, and they will continue to have renewals every 12 months.
What is the Medicaid Expansion Category?
The 2027 changes to renewal cycles only apply to Medicaid members in the adult expansion category. Members in all other Medicaid categories will continue to have renewals every 12 months.
Medicaid expansion members are members who:
- Are between age 19 and 64
- Are not pregnant
- Do not have a disability
- Are not enrolled in Medicare
- Meet income limits (earn up to 138% of the federal poverty level or about $22,025 per year for one person or $45,540 for a family of four)

- On the My Benefits Dashboard under
Benefit Summary, find the Medicaid program case information. The
Next Review Date is the date of their next Medicaid Renewal.

Do members have to do anything at each renewal?
The most important thing for members to do is check their mail, email, and text messages regularly in case DHHS asks them for information.
Many times, DHHS will be able to complete renewals without asking members to send any information. If DHHS does not send a request to a member, then they do not have to send additional information. If DHHS does send a request, members can send information online, by mail, over the phone, or in person at a local DHHS office.
