What you need to know

Nebraska's 988 call center is located at BoysTown near Omaha. A call is routed through Vibrant Emotional Health to a call center based on the caller's area code or geolocation.

When You Contact 988, Expect a Safe Place to Share

If You Call

  1. You'll hear a brief greeting.
    The system routes your call to the nearest available crisis center based on your area code.
  2. A trained counselor will answer.
    They will listen without judgment, ask questions to understand the situation, and work with you to find the best way forward.
  3. You'll receive support and resources.
    Counselors provide coping strategies, safety planning if needed, and connections to local services.
  4. Additional help may be arranged.
    The Mobile Crisis Response team may be activated to offer additional support to de-escalate a high-risk situation. Counselors will work with you to involve local immediate response services only when necessary to ensure everyone's safety.

If You Text

  • You will be connected with a trained counselor through a secure text platform.
  • The conversation is confidential and similar to a call—counselors will listen, help you talk through what's happening, and offer resources and support.
  • This option can be helpful if you prefer not to talk out loud or need privacy.
  • You can text in English or Spanish.

If You Chat

  • Chats take place through a secure online system.
  • You'll complete a brief questionnaire before being connected with a counselor.
  • The counselor will support you through real-time typed conversation.
  • You can chat in English or Spanish.
