What you need to know

​​​​Medication Aides:
  • Only give routine medications to another person.
  • Give medications based on the Five Rights – right person, right drug, right amount, right time, and right route.
  • Chart medication(s) given on person's record.
  • Work under the direction and oversight of a competent individual, caretaker, or licensed healthcare professional.

Aides must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have successfully demonstrated 10 competencies and the basic routes
  • Be of good moral character

Two levels:

  • Medication Aide - 40 hour: can work in any setting. 
    • Must pass a Medication Aide course of 40 hours in length
    • Must pass a state exam and
    • Must be knowledgeable of the 10 competencies and the basic routes.
  • Medication Aide: can work in settings other than nursing homes, assisted living facilities and intermediate care facilities for the developmentally disabled.
    • Knowledgeable of the 10 competencies and the basic routes.

Applications, Forms, & Fees


  • What does "Pending" on the registry mean?
    Pending means we have received your application and the application is being reviewed and processed. We receive a very high number of applications. We process applications in the order received. We receive applications via mail and walk-ins.
  • Can I pay the fee with a credit/debit card?
    No, we are not able to accept credit or debit card payments. We accept checks, money orders, and cash. If you send or bring cash, please provide the exact amount; we cannot give change.
  • Can I work as a medication aide before I am active on the registry?
    Yes, if you have met all the criteria. This includes having taken the exam to be listed as a Medication Aide on the Registry. You may only work for up to 30 days pending the results of your exam and/or placement on the registry if you have NEVER been a Medication Aide before and have never been on the Medication Aide Registry before.
