Competency assessment - NAC Title 172, Chapter 96 Medication Aide Registry
40-hour course and exam - Medication Aides who work in a nursing home, an intermediate care facility for the developmentally disabled, or an assisted living facility must pass a Medication Aide Course lasting 40 hours and a state approved exam that tests minimum competency for medication provision. Passing score is 72 percent or greater.

- Questions about testing or test results should be directed to the exam provider.
- Fees for examinations are determined by and must be paid to the exam provider.
Lapsed medication aide - If you are a lapsed Medication Aide:
Medication Aide 40-Hour from another state:
- Pass the Nebraska 40-hour Medication Aide exam given by a Nebraska approved testing center
- Complete the Initial Application. The competency standards can be found in the Medication Aide Regulations chapter 95.
- Complete a Documentation of Course Completion (this can be a certificate from your course provider with the number of hours listed)
- Pay the non-refundable fee of $18
Nursing Student - to meet the requirements for registration as a Medication Aide 40-hour:
- Pass the 40-hour Medication Aide exam given by a Nebraska approved testing center
- Complete the Initial Application. The competency standards can be found in the Medication Aide Regulations chapter 95.
- Complete nursing courses equivalent to the MA 40-hour course. Course instructor must sign this portion of the application form.
- Pay the non-refundable fee of $18
Lapsed/Inactive RN or LPN – complete the Initial Application.
Disciplined RN or LPN - A registered nurse or licensed practical nurse whose license has been revoked, suspended, or voluntarily surrendered in lieu of discipline may not register as a medication aide.
