For Individuals Who May Have Been Exposed
If you are not immune to measles and have been exposed at any of the following locations, you need to urgently call your health care provider to receive PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) for measles. If you can get a measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine within 72 hours of exposure, you can avoid developing measles. If you are not eligible to get the MMR vaccine, i.e., children under 6 months of age, pregnant women, or severely immunocompromised people, then you can get another form of PEP called immunoglobulin within 6 days of exposure to prevent measles.
If an exposed individual develops symptoms, they should notify their health care provider or a health care facility before going to a medical office or emergency department for evaluation to ensure the facility can prepare to protect other patients and medical staff from possible exposure. Exposed individuals who are unvaccinated against measles should talk with their doctor about getting the MMR vaccine. It is not harmful to get the MMR vaccine after being exposed to measles, and doing so may prevent severe measles if given early enough after exposure.
