Lincoln, Neb. – On June 10, 2022, the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) will host a virtual job fair for individuals interested in becoming a Children and Family Services (CFS) specialist in the Columbus, NE area. The virtual job fair will take place from 12-4 p.m. and on-the-spot interviews will be conducted.

CFS specialists directly support DHHS's mission of “Helping People Live Better Lives" through critical family services. Supporting families as they build their future and ensure the safety and wellbeing of children is at the heart of what specialists do. CFS specialists assess claims of child abuse and neglect; including interviewing family members to assess if abuse or neglect has occurred, assessing risk and safety issues, recommendation of services, and determining if further intervention is necessary. Current CFS specialists find fulfillment through seeing children in stable, loving homes, giving a voice to children and their parents, and providing families with the tools they need to succeed.

“The work of a CFS specialist is challenging, but one where you can impact the lives of others in so many ways. Whether that is teammates within DHHS, external stakeholders, or with youth and families we serve. Empowering others, seeing youth and families overcome challenges, and being a part of a team that makes a difference every single day is why I have found such pleasure in this work for the last 20 years," said Service Area Administrator for the Northern Service Area, Lara Swerczeck.

A CFS specialist is required to have a Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, sociology, counseling, human development, mental health care, education, criminal justice, or other closely related areas. Consideration will be given to applicants who are enrolled in the final semester of school. Promotion to the Child and Family Services Specialist classification is contingent on successful completion of degree requirements and required training.

Employment at DHHS comes with a wide variety of benefits! These include career development and learning, tuition reimbursement, a 156% employer contribution to a retirement plan, 13 paid holidays, generous leave and accrual benefits, and the opportunity to be a part of a caring organization!
