History: In 2017, Nebraska Governor, Pete Ricketts signed the Palliative Care and Quality of Life Act, Statute § 71-4501 through 71-4504, into law. The law established the Palliative Care Consumer and Professional Information and Education Program and the Palliative Care and Quality of Life Council.

The mission of the Palliative Care and Quality of Life Council is to improve the quality of life for Nebraskans living with serious illness through education and advocacy.

The nine-member council includes physicians and nurses certified under the Hospice and Palliative Medicine Certification Program administered by the American Board of Internal Medicine and other experienced palliative care professionals. Council members provide best practices, recommendations, education and expertise to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.
