How do I know if my baby's formula has been recalled?


The FDA is advising consumers not to use Similac, Alimentum or EleCare powdered infant formulas if all of the following are true:
  • The first two digits of the code are 22 through 37 AND
  • The code on the container contains K8, SH, or Z2, AND
  • The expiration date is 4-1-2022 (APR 2022) or later.

Abbott has also developed a web-based tool to determine if your formula was included in this recall. You can check your formula's lot number, located at the bottom of your formula container. 


What formula can I get from WIC right now?

Nebraska WIC has received waivers from USDA allowing us to TEMPORARILY offer different brands of formula until more formula that is not affected by the recall is available. See formula options available.  Please call your local WIC office to have your food package changed.

If you receive formula from WIC but cannot find your brand of formula in stores due to the recall, WIC can help find alternate formulas.

Can Size Clarification: The standard Similac formulas provided by WIC are 12 ounce cans. WIC may have TEMPORARILY changed your benefits on your eWIC card (in case you cannot find your Similac formula at the store). The new formula may come in a different size. ​If you receive formula from WIC and have purchased recalled formula with your eWIC card:

  • Step 1: Do not use the formula. If you do not have formula and need formula immediately, contact your loc​al WIC office to let you know of your options.
  • Step 2*: Contact the store you purchased the recalled formula from. The store may be able to exchange your recalled formula for a similar formula of your choosing that is a comparable amount. The store will follow their exchange policy for all customers including WIC participants. They may offer you a formula:
    • That is the same brand
    • That is a different brand
    • That is a different formula type (including powdered to concentrate or powdered to ready-to-feed).

If the store does not have any product available to exchange, keep your cans and try to exchange at a later date.

*NE WIC is able to temporarily offer this option for participants because of special waivers given by USDA, due to this recall.

  • Step 3: If you are not able to exchange the formula at the store, you may decide to return the product directly to Abbott.  WIC participants have the same rights as all other consumers under this recall and may follow directions from Abbott, provided via www.similacrecall.com or 1-800-986-8540 for returning recalled product.

What if I cannot find any formula?

The COVID-19 pandemic caused a shortage of formula in some stores. Abbott's voluntary formula recall made these shortages worse. We want your baby to be healthy and safe. Here are the answers to the questions we hear most often.​
