Lincoln – International Infection Prevention Week, October 17 through October 23, provides a perfect opportunity to remind Nebraskans to take steps to avoid getting the flu, COVID-19, or other infections.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), each year, at least 2.8 million people get an antibiotic-resistant bacterial infection, and 35,000 die.
Ways to protect yourself and others from infection, courtesy of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) and the CDC:
- Wash your hands often – this is the most effective way you can prevent infections.
- Keep personal items such as cups, toothbrushes, and lip gloss to yourself.
- Get vaccinated.
- Stay home if you're sick.
- Cover your coughs and sneezes.
- Take your MEDS (meditate, exercise, diet, and sleep)
- Keep your environment clean.
- Get fresh air.
- Take medications as directed.
- If you are having surgery, ask if you should shower with a germ-killing soap ahead of time.
- Practice food safety - clean, separate, cook, and chill.
- Keep yourself hydrated and skin moisturized.
- Swim in well-maintained pools or recreational facilities. Stay out of the water if you have an open wound, and ensure that infants wear swim diapers.
- Avoid insect bites and use repellant.
If you are living with someone who has a weakened immune system or who is at increased risk for severe disease, you may also choose to take additional precautions. According to the CDC, people who have a health condition or are taking medications that weaken their immune system, may not be protected even if they have been fully vaccinated. If you are living with someone who has a weakened immune system or is at increased risk for severe disease, you may also choose to wear a mask in all indoor public settings.
