What you need to know

Telehealth consultation and monitoring services are accessible tools that can meet the needs of clients, presenting a wide range of potential benefits for both physical and behavioral health.

As the COVID-19 public health emergency continues, these services are more important than ever to attend to the needs of clients. However telehealth services, during and after the public health emergency, remain an important part of the services Medicaid provides.

For Providers

Providers will be reimbursed at the same rate as in-person services by Medicaid.

Prior to an initial telehealth consultation or telemonitoring, the healthcare provider must obtain informed consent from the client adhering to guidelines found in 471 NAC 1-006.05

The billing costs of conducting the teleconferencing or telemonitoring are set in the Medicaid fee schedule as 'transmission costs' and include reimbursement for all two-way, real-time, and interactive communications, unless provided by an internet service provider (see 471 NAC 1-004).

The medical record of the telehealth service must follow all applicable statutes and regulations on documentation. The use of telehealth technology must also be documented in the same medical record and include documentation of who initiated the call, the telecommunication technology utilized, and the time the service began and ended.

Tip: Hands-on

There are some exceptions to telehealth's wide range of uses. Telehealth will not be used for services which are considered 'hands on.'
