What you need to know

Before providing services, verify your patient's Medicaid eligibility. Be sure to note if your patient is enrolled in a Medicaid managed care plan, has Medicare, or any third-party insurance coverage.

Ask to see the client's Nebraska Medicaid identification card. For an explanation and examples of these documents, see 471-000-123.

You can verify Medicaid eligibility four ways:

  1. Call the automated Nebraska Medicaid eligibility system (NMES). For instructions, see 471-000-124.
  2. Work with your electronic data interchange (EDI) clearinghouse to set up electronic Health Care Eligibility Benefit Inquiry (ASC X12N 270/271). For more information, go to electronic data interchange
  3. Access client eligibility through the internet. Separate login IDs and passwords are required for each person accessing the site. For enrollment forms, go to internet access for providers.
  4. Call the Medicaid claims customer service at (877) 255-3092 or (402) 471-9128.
