Lincoln – The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) understands the value of child care and the importance of maintaining and retaining child care providers in Nebraska. While originally planned to end on Sept. 30, DHHS is extending its timeline to cover the $45.25 fee charged by the Nebraska State Patrol for completing background checks to April 30, 2024. The Department will pay this fee for all DHHS-required childcare staff and applicable household members.

“Child care is a vital service that thousands of Nebraska families rely on," said Children and Family Services Division Interim Director Tony Green. “DHHS wants to ensure we are doing all we can to help support the child care workforce."

The Department will be using the Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF) Program to underwrite the cost of background checks through April 30, 2024. The Department will make payments directly to the Nebraska State Patrol. An FAQ is available for providers at: https://dhhs.ne.gov/licensure/pages/child-care-licensing.aspx.
