Every baby should celebrate their first birthday.

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services is committed to decrease infant mortality and increase the number of babies' first birthday celebrations throughout the state. The NE Safe Babies Campaign launched in the spring of 2017 with the Safe Sleep Hospital Campaign to 54 Nebraska birthing hospitals. The Abusive Head Trauma Prevention Hospital Campaign was introduced in the summer of 2018, and fall of 2019 the Clinic Campaign was introduced to Obstetric, Pediatric and Family Practice Clinics throughout Nebraska.

Nebraska Safe Babies

Infant Mortality Rate refers to the death of an infant before his or her birthday, and is calculated by the number of infant deaths for every 1,000 live births. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Nebraska's 2020 Infant Mortality Rate is 5.68 deaths per 1,000 live births, compared to the United States overall rate of 5.4 deaths per 1,000 live births.

The overall goal of the Nebraska Safe Babies Campaign is to provide evidence-based education to parents of newborns as well as hospital and clinic staff. Providing a consistent baseline education for all hospital and clinic personnel caring for children under the age of one will provide a consistent, evidence-based message to parents of approximately 25,000 newborns across the State.

Please join us in decreasing infant mortality in Nebraska.  Every baby should celebrate their first birthday.
