What you need to know

An Acupuncturist: 

  1. Has graduated from a formal, full-time acupuncture program at a university, college, or school of acupuncture approved by the board which includes at least 1,725 hours of entry-level acupuncture education. The education must consist of a minimum of 1,000 didactic and 500 clinical hours.
  2. Has passed an acupuncture examination approved by the board which shall include a comprehensive written examination in acupuncture theory, diagnosis and treatment technique, and point location; and
  3. Has successfully completed a clean-needle technique course approved by the Nebraska Board of Medicine and Surgery.

A licensed acupuncturist shall refer a patient to an appropriate licensed practitioner when the patient's problem is beyond the training, experience, or competence of the acupuncturist.

Renewal Information

On or before May 1 of each odd-numbered year, submit the following:

  • A completed application
  • Attestation that you've met continuing competency requirements for renewal 
  • Renewal fee of $121.00

Continuing Competency Requirement for License Renewal

To renew your license, you must earn one of the following:

  • 50 hours of continuing education approved by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM)
    - Hours are to be earned within the 24 months immediately preceding the date of expiration, except that a licensee who has earned more than the 50 hours required for license renewal for one 24 month renewal period is allowed to carry over up to 25 hours to the next 24 month renewal period
  • 50 hours of Category 1 continuing education approved by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA)
    - Hours are to be earned within the 24 months immediately preceding the date of expiration, except that a licensee who has earned more than the 50 hours required for license renewal for one 24 month renewal period is allowed to carry over up to 25 hours to the next 24 month renewal period
  • Active certification or active recertification of diplomat status with the NCCAOM earned within the 24 months immediately preceding the date of expiration
