The State Board of Health is a 17-member board appointed by the Governor with the consent of a majority of the members of the Legislature. Members include:
- two individuals licensed to practice medicine and surgery
- one dentist
- one optometrist
- one veterinarian
- one pharmacist
- two nurses
- one osteopath or osteopathic surgeon
- one podiatrist
- one chiropractor
- one physical therapist
- one professional engineer
- one hospital administrator
- one credentialed mental health professional
- two laypersons interested in the health of the people of the state of Nebraska
The Governor is an ex officio member of the board.
The Board has the power and duty to adopt and promulgate rules and regulations for the government of the professions and occupations licensed, certified, registered or issued permits by the Department of Health and Human Services Licensure Unit. This includes rules and regulations necessary to implement laws enforcement by the department and determine the policies of the department concerning the professions and occupations listed in section 71-2610.01(a) of Nebraska State Statutes (1997).
The Board also advises DHHS on public health issues.
