What you need to know

​​​​​​​​A registered environmental health specialist interprets and enforces city, state, federal and/or other laws regarding sanitary standards in food, water supply, garbage disposal, sewage disposal and housing maintenance.

A registered environmental health specialist collects samples and specimens for laboratory analysis and conducts inspections of schools, hospitals, parks, motels, food establishments and other public facilities to insure that proper control of waste, refuse, noise, insects, hazardous substances and products is maintained.

License Requirements

See the Regulations for the requirements for certification of Registered Environmental Health Specialists.

Provisional Environmental Health Specialist shall mean a person who is qualified by education but does not have the experience requirement. A Provisional Environmental Health Specialist certification shall be valid for one year and may be renewed for two additional one-year periods. 

Fee Information

Fees are payable to the Licensure Unit.

Continuing Education and Renewal Information

Continuing Education

Each registered environmental health specialist must complete 24 hours of acceptable continuing education during the preceding 24-month period prior to renewal.

Renewal Information

All Registered Environmental Health Specialist certificates expire December 31st of each even numbered year. DHHS, Licensure Unit will send the certificate holder a renewal notice at least 30 days before December 31st of each even numbered year to the certificate holder's last address of record.

Certification as a provisional environmental health specialist shall be valid for one year and may be renewed for two additional one-year periods. In no case, shall a certificate for a provisional environmental health specialist exceed a three-year period.
