What you need to know

A Genetic Counselor is a person who has (1) met the requirements established by the national genetic counseling board to take the national certification examination in general genetics or genetic counseling and (2) been granted active candidate status by the national genetic counseling board.

The Genetic Counselor is licensed to practice within the scope of genetic counseling under the Uniform Credentialing Act and as described within 38-3415.

Renewal, Continuing Education & Reinstatement

Renewal Information

Genetic Counselor licenses expire on October 1 of each even-numbered year. To renew, on or before that date you must: 

  • Submit a completed application
  • Meet the renewal requirements for continuing competency
  • Submit payment of the renewal fee of $110 to DHHS, Public Health, Licensure Unit

Continuing Competency

You must earn ONE of the following in order to meet the continuing competency requirement:

  • Recertification with the American Board of Genetic Counseling by examination or by continuing education; OR
  • Recertification with the American Board of Medical Genetics by participating in Maintenance of Certification
