Once you become part of Team DHHS, we offer on-the-job, classroom and online training opportunities throughout your career with our organization.

  • Team Up: A 3 hour orientation to welcome new team members.
  • Lean Six Sigma White Belt Certification: An introduction into process improvement. Yellow Belt certification is also offered.
  • Additional training on workplace policies, confidentiality, etc. to help teammates be successful in their positions.
  • If your career at DHHS requires professional accreditation or certification, you may receive support to complete continuing education units.​​
  • All DHHS Teammates have access to over 16,000 LinkedIn Learning courses.

​Behavioral Technician

Behavioral Technicians (BT) in our facilities receive the following hands on training working with our Care Training Team:

  • Facility specific expectations for care of youth participating in treatment by facility experts.
  • CPR/AED/First Aid American Heart Association Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Automated External Defibrillation and First Aid from American Heart Association Certified Trainers.
  • Handle with Care® Behavior Management System specialized training in verbal de-escalation, safe physical management methods for aggressive, assaultive and challenging behaviors from field experts.
  • Medication Aide training and registry status to safely administer medications and treatments to the individuals in our care under Nebraska law by nurse experts.
  • On-the-job Training (OJT) as directed by supervision.​

Child and Family Services Specialist

Child and Family Services Specialists (CFSS) receive New Worker Training to prepare for case management duties. Training is provided in partnership with the University of Nebraska Center on Children, Families and The Law and DHHS.  Trainees receive:

  • Self-paced online, virtual, and local service area training.
  • Foundations of child protection and safety training contain Engaging Families, Structured Decision Making, and Safety Organized Practice.
  • Additional units emphasize trauma, child development, domestic violence, human trafficking, and the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA), as it relates to child welfare.
  • Training completion is based on position specialization: Intake/Child and Adult Abuse and Neglect Hotline, Initial Assessment, Ongoing Case Management, and Adoption.​

Developmental Technician II

Developmental Technician II (DTII) in our facilities receive the following hands-on training:

  • Facility New Employee Orientation training specific expectations for care and safety of individuals residing at the Beatrice State Developmental Center by facility experts.
  • Intermediate Care Facility Nurse Aide training and registry status to safely care for the individuals in our care under Nebraska law by nurse experts.
  • CPR/AED/First Aid American Heart Association Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Automated External Defibrillation and First Aid from American Heart Association Certified Trainers.
  • The Mandt System® comprehensive and integrated approach to preventing, de-escalating, and intervening when the behavior of an individual poses a threat of harm to themselves or others from Mandt System Certified trainers.
  • Electronic documentation system (Therap) training to access the individuals' care strategies and enter care provided.
  • *40- Hour Medication Aide training and registry status to safely administer medications and treatments to the individuals in our care under Nebraska law by nurse experts.
  • On-the-job Training (OJT) as directed by supervision.​

Eligibility Operations Worker

Eligibility Operations Workers (EOWs) work with clients applying for and receiving Medicaid and/or Economic Assistance benefits.  They receive New Worker Training to prepare them for accepting applications and determining eligibility at time of initial application, renewal/recertification, and when changes are reported.

Training is provided in partnership with the DHHS Learning and Development team, experienced workers, and supervisors. Trainees receive:

  • Instructor led classroom or virtual training on relevant policies and procedures.
  • Hands-on training and support from experienced workers prior to working cases independently.
  • Ongoing training to address changes in policy and/or to strengthen workers' skills.
  • Additional skills training will be provided when deemed appropriate. This allows EOWs to work with more specific populations, including low income families requesting child care or rent assistance, or clients with disabilities, receiving Medicare and Medicaid, and/or clients residing in long-term care facilities or receiving equivalent services in the community.  ​

Licensed Practical Nurse

Licensed Practical Nurse (LRN) in our facilities receive the following hands on training:

  • Facility New Employee Orientation training expectations for care and safety of the client population by facility experts.
  • Nursing Orientation for LPNs of duties, responsibilities, resources, expectations, etc. training by Registered Nurses.
  • Behavior Management Training either Handle with Care or the Mandt System depending on facility:
    • Handle with Care® Behavior Management System specialized training in verbal de-escalation, safe physical management methods for aggressive, assaultive and challenging behaviors from field experts.
    • The Mandt System® comprehensive and integrated approach to preventing, de-escalating, and intervening when behavior of an individual poses a threat of harm to themselves or others from Mandt System Certified trainers.
  • Electronic documentation system (MyAvatar and/or Therap) training to access the individuals' record and document client status including care and safety interventions provided.
  • CPR/AED/First Aid as required of the facility for Registered Nurses, American Heart Association Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Automated External Defibrillation and First Aid from American Heart Association Certified Trainers.
  • On-the-job Training (OJT) as directed by supervision.​

Mental Health Security Specialist II

Mental Health Security Specialist II (MHSSII) in our facilities receive the following hands on training:

  • Facility New Employee Orientation training expectations for care and safety of adults participating in treatment by facility experts.
  • Mental Health Security Specialist II specific training by facility experts.
  • Handle with Care® Behavior Management System specialized training in verbal de-escalation, safe physical management methods for aggressive, assaultive and challenging behaviors from field experts.
  • Electronic documentation system (MyAvatar) training to access the individuals' record and enter client status including care and safety measures provided.
  • *CPR/AED/First Aid (if required in assigned area) American Heart Association Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Automated External Defibrillation and First Aid from American Heart Association Certified Trainers.
  • *Medication Aide (if required in assigned area) training and registry status to safely administer medications and treatments to the individuals in our care under Nebraska law by nurse experts.
  • On-the-job Training (OJT) as directed by supervision.​

Registered Nurse

Registered Nurse (RN) in our facilities receive the following hands on training:

  • Facility New Employee Orientation training expectations for care and safety of the client population by facility experts.
  • Nursing Orientation for RNs of duties, responsibilities, resources, expectations, etc. training by Registered Nurses.
  • Behavior Management Training either Handle with Care or the Mandt System depending on facility:
    • Handle with Care® Behavior Management System specialized training in verbal de-escalation, safe physical management methods for aggressive, assaultive and challenging behaviors from field experts.
    • The Mandt System® comprehensive and integrated approach to preventing, de-escalating, and intervening when behavior of an individual poses a threat of harm to themselves or others from Mandt System Certified trainers.
  • Electronic documentation system (MyAvatar and/or Therap) training to access the individuals' record and document assessment of client status including care and safety interventions provided and progress in treatment.
  • CPR/AED/First Aid as required of the facility for Registered Nurses, American Heart Association Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Automated External Defibrillation and First Aid from American Heart Association Certified Trainers.
  • On-the-job Training (OJT) as directed by supervision.​

Youth Program Specialist

Youth Program Specialist (YPS) in our facilities receive the following hands on training:

  • Facility specific expectations for care and safety of youth participating in treatment in accordance with American Correctional Association (ACA) requirements by facility experts.
  • Treatment Program training to help youth move forward in increase success of treatment interventions facility experts.
  • CPR/AED/First Aid American Heart Association Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Automated External Defibrillation and First Aid from American Heart Association Certified Trainers.
  • Handle with Care® Behavior Management System specialized training in verbal de-escalation, safe physical management methods for aggressive, assaultive and challenging behaviors from field experts.
  • *Medication Aide training and registry status to safely administer medications and treatments to the youth in treatment under Nebraska law by nurse experts.
  • On-the-job Training (OJT) as directed by supervision.​

Leadership Positions

People Leaders at every level in DHHS receive additional training for our Academy Training Team. Currently most sessions are available online, and many of the sessions are self-paced.  Here is the specialized training our leaders receive:

  • Supervisor Meet & Greet: A live, virtual 1 hour session to empower new leaders covering available resources to new DHHS leaders.
  • Supervision 101 - Solutions for a New Supervisor's First 10 Days: This self-paced session introduces supervisory tasks such as approving time cards, leave and training request.
  • Supervision 201 - Guidance for the Supervisor's First 90 Days: This self-paced session introduces supervisors to necessary skills to be successful in their position include an introduction to Performance Management, Talent Acquisitions, Coaching, and running Effective Meetings.
  • Supervision 301: Two session that help leaders dive deeper into topics, processes and best practices in sessions on the following targeted topics:
    • Interview Skills for the Hiring Manager 
    • ​Performance Management and the Discipline Process
    • Onboarding: Process, Expectations, and Best Practices
  • Sup Talk - Conversations with the Experts: A live, virtual 1 hour sessions on the “hot topic" interesting supervisors statewide. New topics offered monthly.​
