Medical x-rays account for the largest man-made radiation source of exposure to the average citizen and the X-ray Program encourages facilities that use x-ray machines to maintain exposures As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA). According to the ALARA principle, facilities are to take reasonable actions to avoid unnecessary exposure to patients, employees and the public.
