What you need to know

​​​​​The Medically Handicapped Children's Program (MHCP) provides specialized medical services for children and youth with special health care needs. Services include service coordination/case management, specialty medical team evaluations, access to specialty physicians, and payment of authorized medical services.

Who may be eligible for this program?

  • Birth through 20 years of age
  • Must be a Nebraska resident
  • Must be diagnosed with an eligible chronic medical condition and an active individual medical treatment plan

    Medical Conditions

    • Severe Asthma
    • Serious burn injuries
    • Cerebral Palsy
    • Craniofacial disorders (may include cleft lip, cleft palate, or other facial defects)
    • Cystic Fibrosis
    • Diabetes
    • Eye conditions requiring surgery
    • Significant hearing loss
    • Heart conditions
    • Hemophilia
    • Midline neurological defects
    • Neoplasm including leukemia and lymphoma
    • Neurological conditions, seizures
    • Orthopedic conditions (may include muscles, joints, ligaments, or spine)
    • Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis
    • Urology conditions

    *This is not a complete list of medical conditions for the Medically Handicapped Children's Program.  If you feel your child and/or youth may have an eligible medical condition, contact a service coordinator.

What services may be available through the Medically Handicapped Children's Program?

Some of the funded services may include:

  • Diagnostic and Consultative Services: These services may include assistance with locating offices of participating specialists, hospitals, or specialty clinics.
  • Treatment Services: Funds are used to pay for costs of prior authorized specialized medical treatment related to the eligible diagnosis(es).  Treatment must be in accordance with the individual treatment plan. 

The Medically Handicapped Children's Program does NOT provide or cover general medical care.

How do I apply for the Medically Handicapped Children's Program?

Individuals, parents, guardians, agencies, and physicians may refer a child/youth to the Medically Handicapped Children's Program at any time. You can request an application from any Department of Health and Human Services local office.
