Lincoln, NE — The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is announcing the launch of a new website to communicate information about Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) services. The website, abafacts.ne.gov, provides accurate information to Nebraska families and providers in response to recent misleading ads and false information given to Medicaid recipients and providers.

Until recently, Nebraska payment rates for ABA services were the highest in the nation. Some rates were more than twice as high as those of other Medicaid programs. These high rates resulted in out-of-state corporations coming into the state to take advantage. In 2020, Nebraska Medicaid paid approximately $4.6 million for ABA Services. In 2024, Nebraska Medicaid paid approximately $85.6 million, an approximate increase of nearly 2,000%. No business, state, or federal program can absorb that kind of growth without facing serious long-term risks.

Unfortunately, bad actors have pushed misleading information about DHHS's efforts to preserve ABA services for Nebraska families.

  • A recent ad claimed DHHS “plans to slash autism services…" – FALSE
    • DHHS is not cutting ABA services. After a thorough rate analysis, DHHS is adjusting its payment rates to better align with surrounding states. Even after factoring in the rate adjustments, Nebraska Medicaid rates for ABA services are competitive with neighboring states and continue to remain above the national average.
  • Medicaid recipients will be forced to pay for ABA services out of pocket – FALSE
    • ABA services for Medicaid recipients will continue to be fully paid by Nebraska Medicaid.

“The new website provides the facts about DHHS efforts to sustain costs and continue this important service for Nebraska children and families," said CEO Steve Corsi. “While it is troubling and concerning that some bad actors will resort to misleading the public, DHHS will respond with the facts."

“DHHS is committed to working with ABA providers to ensure access to ABA services remains strong in Nebraska," said Medicaid and Long-Term Care Division Director Drew Gonshorowski. “If families and providers have questions, we encourage them to reach out to DHHS directly and not rely on misleading statements found in advertisements."

To view the website, please visit abafacts.ne.gov. The website will be continuously updated to address ongoing misinformation that may be released to the public and providers.
