Lincoln, NE – The LIHEAP heating season is ending on March 31. The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) encourages low-income households to apply for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). LIHEAP helps low-income households stay safe and healthy by providing financial assistance to offset heating and cooling costs.
The heating season is from October 1 through March 31. Heating assistance payments are made once per season to utility providers. The payment reduces the amount a household must pay toward residential utilities.
To qualify for LIHEAP, a household must:
- Have income at or below 150% of the federal poverty level (FPL); (see table below)
- Meet the LIHEAP citizenship and residency requirements;
- Be responsible for home energy utilities; and
- Not be otherwise disqualified or ineligible.

DHHS, through LIHEAP, assisted over 34,000 Nebraskan households during the heating season. This assistance helped families avoid energy crises and maintain safe, warm, and healthy homes.
Households currently receiving Economic Assistance benefits or with a pending case do not need to apply to receive LIHEAP. LIHEAP can be requested online through a change report within the iServe portal. Individuals not currently receiving Economic Assistance benefits can apply for LIHEAP through DHHS:
