Lincoln, NE – In honor of National Public Health Week, Governor Jim Pillen signed a proclamation highlighting the critical work being done every day by public health professionals across our state.  This year's theme, “It Starts Here," emphasizes that all Nebraskans can participate in activities that promote public health in their communities, ultimately leading to a healthier future for Nebraska.

Public health touches every part of life, from access to clean water and air to providing the education and resources that help Nebraskans live better lives. The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Public Health administers over 125 programs and services. These programs are designed to help people live longer, healthier lives and protect them from health risks such as disease outbreaks and chronic conditions, support emergency preparedness and environmental health, document vital records, and develop data-driven prevention efforts.

“We are excited to celebrate National Public Health Week, which highlights the outstanding contributions of Nebraska's public health workforce," said Charity Menefee, DHHS Director of Public Health. “I would like to take a moment to say thank you to all public health professionals across our great state. Together, let us continue building a healthier, safer, and stronger Nebraska for years to come."

The Nebraska public health workforce consists of professionals working across many sectors, including the Division of Public Health, 19 Local Public Health Departments, academic institutions, Tribal health departments, healthcare providers, and first responders. Whether they work in government health departments, hospitals, community clinics, or even in the field during an emergency, everyone involved in public health shares one common goal: protecting and improving the health and well-being of Nebraskans.

“This year marks 30 years of celebrating National Public Health Week," said Menefee. “Our communities are stronger when we work together to prevent illness, build healthier communities, and improve the quality of life for all Nebraskans."
