Requirements

Competency assessment - NAC Title 172, Chapter 96 Medication Aide Registry
 
40 hour course and exam - Medication Aides who provide medications in a nursing home, an intermediate care facility for the developmentally disabled, or an assisted living facility must pass Medication Aide Course lasting 40 hours and a state approved examination that tests minimum competency for medication provision. Passing score is 72% or greater.

  • Questions regarding testing or test results should be directed to the examination provider.
  • Fees for examinations are determined by the examination provider and must be remitted to the examination provider.
Lapsed medication aide - If you are a lapsed Medication Aide you will need to complete the following:
Medication Aide 40-Hour from another state
  • Successful completion of the Nebraska 40-hour Medication Aide examination conducted by a Nebraska approved testing center.
  • Completed Initial Application. The competency standards can be found in the Medication Aide Regulations.
  • Completed Documentation of Course Completion (this can be a certificate from your course provider with the number of hours listed).
  • Non-refundable fee of $18.00
Nursing Student - to meet the requirements for registration as a Medication Aide 40-hour:
  • Successful completion of the 40-hour Medication Aide examination conducted by a Nebraska approved testing center.
  • Completed Initial Application. The competency standards can be found in the Medication Aide Regulations.
  • Completion of nursing courses equivalent to MA 40-hour course. Instructor of course(s) must sign this portion of the application form.
  • Non-refundable fee of $18.00
Lapsed/Inactive RN or LPN – completion of the Initial Application.
 
Disciplined RN or LPN - A registered nurse or licensed practical nurse whose license has been revoked, suspended, or voluntarily surrendered in lieu of discipline may not register as a medication aide.
