Portion sizes are a lot larger than they were in the past, which often means we are taking in much more calories than we realize. 

The increase in portion size may be contributing to the high prevalence of overweight/obesity of the American population.  Therefore, it is important that individuals can determine correct portions sizes and daily calories needed.
