| There are a variety of state and federal programs which require a shortage area designation for one to be eligible to participate. The Office of Rural Health has an agreement with the University of Nebraska Medical Center's Health Professions Tracking Service to monitor and assure timely information regarding health care provider practice locations and availability. Due to the fact that shortage area designations may change throughout the year, we will make updates available through the links on this Office of Rural Health web site.
State shortage area designations are set by the Rural Health Advisory Commission. Marlene Janssen, Program Manager for the Office of Rural Health, is the Executive Director for the Rural Health Advisory Commission and administers the state student loan and loan repayment programs.
Federal shortage area designations are made by the federal Shortage Designation Branch. Thomas Rauner is the Primary Care Office Director. Tom reviews and submits federal shortage designation proposals to the Shortage Designation Branch.
