What is the EMS Educational Training Materials Loan Service?
The Nebraska EMS Program has contracted with various providers to purchase educational materials in the form of DVD’s. These educational materials will be available upon request to Nebraska emergency medical services, training agencies, and EMS instructors to use as educational enrichment or for continuing education purposes.
What kind of material is available to be borrowed?
The EMS Educational Training Materials Loan Service provides videos in either DVD or VHS format along with instructor guides for most DVD's. A link to the "EMS Video Description List" is located at the bottom of this page. The video titles listed in blue are available for in-house training, and the video titles listed in green are only available for individual training.
What is the purpose of the EMS Educational Training Materials Loan Service?
In House Training:
In-house training is defined as training that is conducted at a regularly scheduled training meeting. When the EMS Educational Training Materials Loan Service is used for in-house training, the videos are to be utilized as a supplement to enhance the scheduled training. These videos may be requested by the training officer or the person in charge of training. In order to receive continuing education hours for this method of training, the service representative will need to document the topic, date of training, identify the training as “In-house” training using the video, and the number of clock hours used for the training. The service must maintain an attendance roster as documentation of the in-house training. There is no limit on the number of continuing education hours an EMS provider may receive for in-house training during their two (2) year certifying period.
Individual Training:
Individuals may complete emergency medical services continuing education training. However, this method of training is intended to be used as a last resort for EMS providers to attain continuing education hours. Individuals are encouraged to attend classes and conferences during the certifying period to accumulate the continuing education hours needed to meet the EMS license requirements. In order to receive continuing education hours for this method of training, the training must be administered by the individual’s emergency medical service captain. This method of training is considered to be a form of distributive education and may only be used to satisfy up to ten (10) hours of continuing education required for each licensed Emergency Medical Responder, EMT, Advanced EMT, and Paramedic, or up to seven (7) hours for each licensed emergency medical responder during a two (2) year certifying period.
Will the EMS Educational Training Materials Loan Service meet CECBEMS requirements?
When the EMS Educational Training Materials Loan Service is used for individual training, the following CECBEMS requirements must be met. The videos must be requested by the individual's emergency medical service captain. The captain must complete documentation of attendance, ensure the individual views the video, and administer the test. Upon return of the documentation, video, and test to the Norfolk EMS Office, the test will be graded. A test score of 80% or better must be achieved for successful completion of the course, and each successfully completed course is worth one (1) hour of continuing education. A certificate of completion for a passing test or notification of a failed test will be mailed to the emergency medical service captain providing documentation of the individual training. Individuals may re-take failed courses. To re-take the course, the captain must submit another video request.
Other Individual Training Services: Individuals may also complete emergency medical services continuing education training online. Contact Connie Hughes by e-mail at connie.hughes@nebraska.gov for a list of websites. These websites offer a variety of CECBEMS approved courses for a minimal fee.
