Emergency Medical Services

Continuing Competency
 
During renewal, each licensee must attest to having met the continuing competency requirements for his/her profession, unless such requirements are waived in accordance with 172 NAC 11-008.03 and 11-008.04 for providers and 172 NAC 13-013.03 and 13-013.04 for instructors.  These requirements must have been obtained within the 24 months prior to the license expiration date.  Each licensee is responsible for maintaining certificates or records of continuing competency activities.  The expiration date and continuing competency requirements for each level of licensure are listed below:
 

License Level Continuing Competency Requirements Date of Renewal
Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)
  • ​Hold a current CPR certification from a Board approved organization;
  • Complete 14 hours of continuing education; AND
  • Have a verification from a physician medical director or
    qualified physician surrogate that the applicant is qualified for renewal as defined in 172 NAC 12-004.08 item 10.a; OR
  • Hold a current EMR certificate from the NREMT.1

​Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
  • ​Hold a current CPR certification from a Board approved organization;
  • Complete 20 hours of continuing education; AND
  • Have a verification from his/her basic life support service’s physician medical director or qualified physician surrogate that the applicant is qualified for renewal as defined in 172 NAC 12-004.08 item 10.b; OR
  • Hold a current EMT certificate from the NREMT.1
​December 31 every odd year
Advanced Emergency medical Technician (AEMT)
  • Hold a current CPR certification from a Board approved organization; AND
  • Complete 26 hours of continuing education; AND
  • Have documentation from the physician medical director or qualified physician surrogate of demonstrated proficiency in peripheral IV access, non-visualize advanced airway management and administration of approved medications in a clinical, out-of-hospital, or educational setting; OR
  • Hold verification from the applicant’s advanced life support service’s physician medical director or qualified physician surrogate that the applicant is qualified for renewal as defined in 172 NAC 12-004.08 item 10.c; OR
  • Hold a current AEMT certificate from the NREMT.1

​Emergency Medical Technician Intermediate (EMT-I)
  • ​Hold a current CPR certification from a Board approved organization; AND
  • Complete 30 hours of continuing education; AND
    Have documentation from a physician or qualified physician surrogate of demonstrated proficiency in peripheral IV administration and endotracheal intubation in a clinical, out-of-hospital or educational setting; OR
  • Have a verification from the applicant’s advanced life support service’s physician medical director or qualified physician surrogate that the applicant is qualified for renewal as defined in 172 NAC 12-004.08 item 10.d; OR
  • Hold a current EMT-I certificate from the NREMT.1
​December 31 every even year

​Paramedic

  • ​Hold a current CPR certification from a Board approved organization; AND
  • Complete 40 hours of continuing education; AND
  • Have documentation by a physician or qualified physician surrogate of demonstrated proficiency in peripheral IV administration, drug administration, cardiac skills and endotracheal intubation in a clinical, out-of-hospital, or educational setting; OR
  • Have a verification by the applicant’s advanced emergency medical service’s physician medical director or qualified physician surrogate that the applicant is qualified for renewal as defined in 172 NAC 12-004.08 item 10.e; OR
  • Hold a current Paramedic certificate from the NREMT.1
​December 31 every even year
​Instructor
  • Hold a current EMS license at or above the level being taught; AND
  • Complete 12 hours of continuing education;
  • Hold a current BLS or ALS Instructor certificate or above; AND
  • Teach at least 12 hours of adult education over public safety or health care.2

​Basic and Advanced Services ​Services must meet the standards as outlined in 172 NAC 12-004 and the renewal requirements as outlined in 172 NAC-007.3 ​December 31 every even year
