Cosmeticians, Cosmetology and Esthetics

Types of licenses issued to individuals by Nebraska:

 

Cosmetician:  Only allowed to apply cosmetics.
 
Cosmetologist:  Provides services upon the hair, wig, skin or nails of any person for beautifying or enhancing physical appearance.  Such as coloring, perming, curling, straightening, cutting, shampooing, etc.  A cosmetologist can also provide esthetic and nail technology services.
 
Cosmetology Instructor:  Teaches cosmetology in a school of cosmetology or an apprentice salon.
 
Esthetician: Provides services by using an electrical or mechanical apparatus or appliance or applying and using products upon the skin (epidermis only) for personal beauty care.

Esthetic Instructor:  Teaches esthetics in a school of cosmetology or school of esthetics.

Temporary License:  Provides cosmetology and/or esthetics for up to 8 weeks under the supervision at all times of a designated supervisor.  Must have graduated from a Nebraska cosmetology/esthetic school and waiting to take the national examination.

 

NOTE:  To practice in Nebraska, you must hold a NEBRASKA license and you must practice in a Nebraska licensed salon, hospital, nursing home, massage therapy establishment, funeral establishment, or other similar facility licensed by DHHS.

 

A license is NOT required in Nebraska to provide the following services:
  • Airbrush tanning
  • Earlobe piercing
  • Manicuring/pedicuring of the NATURAL nail
  • Natural Hair Braiding
  • Threading to remove hair
  • Retail/wholesale of cosmetics or other beauty/nail products
