Welcome to the Nebraska Health Navigation Training Resource site. The site is designed to provide information on health navigation courses and resources.

There is a need in Nebraska to build a comprehensive and interconnected healthcare navigation system that works together with community partners and clients in order to provide services and appropriate referrals.

As roles evolve there is a need to do training and skills development. In Nebraska, there are programs available that can provide enhanced skills, build upon core competencies and basic health education so that participants can receive a Community Health Worker certificate in Nebraska. Below are the programs that are currently available:

Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services Health Navigator/Community Health Worker Certification

This is an online course provided FREE of charge. The course is highly interactive, involving online case studies, resources and participant discussion. Weekly sessions devised to fit within your own schedule. Expect to spend 90 minutes per week during the course of the online workshop, including any assignments. There is a required, 1-day face-to-face training, prior to starting the online course. The course will then take approximately 10 weeks. There will be a 2-day, face-to-face skill building workshop. The course will conclude as the participant gains practical experience through a Community Health Worker Capstone Project. A certificate of course completion will be awarded.

Northeast Nebraska Public Health Department & Northeast Community College

HLTH 1210 – Community Health Worker Course – 3.0 College Credit Hours - $291.00

This course is designed for members of the general public who want to be trained as Community Health Workers (CHW) to conduct safe and effective outreach to vulnerable populations for medical personnel or health care organizations. CHWs will implement programs in the community that promote, maintain, and improve individual and community health. The course is designed to meet the skills necessary for community health workers in a public health organization, health care facility or other health-related agency. This course meets Thursday evenings 6-9pm for 10 weeks followed by 45 hours of practicum. A certificate of course completion will be awarded.

Nebraska Office of Health Disparities and Health Equity – Lay Health Ambassador Program

The Lay Health Ambassador Program is a program offered for FREE that will assist members of the community to build community capacity by increasing health knowledge and empowerment through a range of activities such as outreach, community education, social support and health promotion. Training includes approximately 6 hours of face-to-face training covering topics such as cultural intelligence, hygiene, nutrition and physical activity, reproductive health, oral health, prevention and control of chronic diseases, and women’s and men’s health. A certificate of course completion will be awarded.
