Background
Mosquitoes acquire the virus from infected birds and pass it on to other birds, animals and people. Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services efforts include trapping mosquitoes, collecting dead birds and testing for human infection. Data are used to track and combat the spread of West Nile virus.

Data Collection Method and Availability
Data collection includes mosquito testing data from University of Nebraska Medical Center Lab, bird testing data from Nebraska’s Veterinary Diagnostic Lab, human data from public health and commercial laboratories. Data are collected weekly and have been collected since 2000.
