The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services' TB Prevention and Control Program Program conducts surveillance, case management, and bacteriology services through Nebraska Public Health Laboratory. In addition, the program provides TB education, medical consultation, follow-up on Class B1 and B2 immigrants and refugees, and technical assistance. Tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and is one of the leading causes of death in the world today.

Data Collection Method and Availability
Information is collected on every new case of active TB. Information is gathered to fill out the "report of verified case of tuberculosis," which is the information requested by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for national TB surveillance. The data have been collected for 19 years in real time.
