Public Health Data Inventory

Nebraska School Absenteeism Surveillance

Background

This surveillance system began as a tool for local public health departments (LPHDs) to develop relationships with the schools in their jurisdiction. The purpose of this surveillance is to identify potential emergent health issues in schools that may be transmitted to or from the community. The database includes the percent of students absent from all schools statewide.

Type of Data

The data are population-based as an ongoing surveillance system (during the school year).

Data Collection Method and Availability

On a weekly basis, schools submit the number of absent students due to illness (influenza-like illness, rash/fever, gastrointestinal, strep, and asthma) to the LPHD in their jurisdiction. The LPHDs enter this data into an online website. Schools also report any unusual absences and outbreaks to the LPHD. The data are collected during the school year. This surveillance system began in 2004.
