Public Health Data Inventory

School Health Profiles Surveys

The School Health Profiles (Profiles) was developed in 1996 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), with assistance from state education authorities, to assess schools' health education and health promotion activities. Profiles ask about school health policies, health education, physical education, asthma management, HIV/AIDS/ and human sexuality, tobacco use prevention, intentional injuries and violence, physical activity, food service, wellness policies and wellness teams, and family and community involvement in school health programs. Profiles help assess school health policies and practices and health promotion activities in states, territories, and large urban school districts.

Profiles are conducted biennially by the Nebraska Department of Education among a representative sample of public elementary and secondary school principals and secondary school lead health teachers. The Nebraska Department of Education has been conducting the Profiles since its inception in 1996. Profiles data provide information to improve health education/services, risk reduction and prevention activities in schools, assists education, community, and state entities to target effective health prevention strategies for school-aged youth, and provide critical data needed to access grants on the local, state, and national levels.
