Newborn Screening is conducted for every baby born in Nebraska, which includes a set of blood tests that can find conditions that could be harmful to a child. Nebraska law requires every baby be tested for disorders that cannot usually be visually detected. Serious effects on a baby’s health can be minimized or prevented with early detection and intervention.
Type of Data
The data are population-based for ongoing surveillance.
Data Collection Method and Availability
All newborns who receive a screen are in this database. Babies who die before a screen is collected may not be entered in the database. Filter paper blood specimens collected at the hospital have demographic information recorded from the medical record. These are sent to the contracted laboratory that enters all these data into the system. When test results are completed they are added to the individual record.
