Nebraska Risk and Protective Factor Student Survey

Background

The Nebraska Risk and Protective Factor Student Survey (NRPFSS) is part of the Nebraska Student Health and Risk Prevention (SHARP) Surveillance System, which includes the coordinated administration of three school-based student health surveys in Nebraska. The NRPFSS is designed to measure adolescent substance abuse, delinquent behaviors, gambling, and the risk and protective factors that predict adolescent problem behaviors. The survey targets all public and non-public school students in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12 in Nebraska.

The survey has been administered five times in Nebraska, with the first administration occurring during the fall of 2003. All participating school districts get a personalized report of their results. The NRPFSS is primarily intended to provide local level data to support local health planning and evaluation. Data are collected, processed, and reported by the Bureau of Sociological Research at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln as a contractor for the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.

Data Collection Method and Availability

The NRPFSS, which is based on nationally validated surveys, is specific to Nebraska and not part of a national surveillance system. All Nebraska schools, public and private, with a grade 6, 8, 10, or 12 are eligible and can choose to participate. In participating schools, all students in eligible grades are asked to complete the survey. Data are collected by paper and pencil administration in the classroom.

The survey has been administered during the fall of 2003, 2005, 2007, 2010, and 2012. Participating school districts get a report containing their results. In addition, reports are generated at the county level (for counties that met the reporting requirements) as well as for substance abuse prevention coalitions, local health departments, behavioral health regions, and the state overall. Reports are available upon request.
