Nebraska Emergency Room Syndromic Surveillance


The Syndromic Surveillance Program is designed and implemented to facilitate public health rapid detection of and response to unusual outbreaks of illness that may be the result of bioterrorism, outbreaks of infectious disease or other public health threats and emergencies.

Type of Data

The data are population-based for ongoing surveillance.

Data Collection Method and Availability

Electronic health record data are collected from all emergency room encounters in all participating facilities. Data elements include date of visit, patient gender, zip code, diagnosis codes, chief complaint, date of birth, and additional clinical information such as vital signs, influenza test results, and others as available. Data have been collected in real time since 2010.
