Public Health Data Inventory

Health Professions Tracking Service

In the mid-1990s, the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) recognized the need for a sustainable statewide healthcare workforce database. Through an agreement with the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC), the Health Professions Tracking Service (HPTS) was established to track and maintain data on healthcare professionals and facilities throughout Nebraska.

Today, HPTS is located at the UNMC College of Public Health and maintains a relational database on licensed healthcare and behavioral health professionals and facilities in the State of Nebraska. The HPTS staff maintains and provides data to support studies that impact workforce planning, DHHS shortage area designations, family practice migration studies, Nebraska’s Health Alert Network, grant funding, research and various business processes.

Type of Data

The HPTS relational database includes the following Nebraska licensed healthcare professionals: physicians, advanced practice registered nurses, physician assistants, dentists, pharmacists, psychologists, mental health providers, addiction counselors, physical therapists, occupational therapists, dental hygienists, veterinarians. The relational database contains current and historical information regarding licensed healthcare professionals, specialties, practice locations (primary and satellite), contact information, education, demographic information and more.

Data Collection Method and Availability

Biannually, HPTS data are compared to DHHS licensure data to capture newly licensed professionals and professionals with lapsed licenses. HPTS captures and maintains data in a relational database with accuracy and timeliness. The HPTS uses various methods to maintain current data; including, but not limited to: a continuous survey process including both facilities and professionals; telephone verification of non-respondent facility information; comparison with State of Nebraska licensure information; media announcements and advertisements; direct contact.
