Public Health Data Inventory

Fetal Death Records

Background

Fetal deaths are required to be reported if the child reached at least 20 weeks gestation.

Type of Data

The data are population-based for ongoing surveillance.

Data Collection Method and Availability

Fetal Death certificates are completed by funeral homes, hospitals and medical certifiers, and the paper record is submitted to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Vital Records. These are entered approximately on a quarterly basis. Fetal death/stillbirth certificates have been filed since 1949. Before 1949, either the birth or death record reflected if it was a stillbirth.
