The Nebraska Legislature created the Child Death Review Team (CDRT) in 1993, in order to review, evaluate, and prevent cases of unexpected and unexplained child deaths. The purpose of the CDRT also includes developing an understanding of the number and causes of child death, and advising the governor, legislature, other policymakers and the public on changes that might prevent them. All child deaths are individually reviewed for type of death and preventability.
Type of Data
The data are population-based for ongoing surveillance.
Data Collection Method and Availability
Secondary (existing) data are collected on all deaths to Nebraska resident children 0-17 years old. Data are collected from multiple sources, including the Vital Records section of the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), the DHHS Office of Protection and Safety and Child Care Licensing section, county attorneys, hospitals, and additional sources as needed. Data are collected annually. The review of the child deaths from 1996 to 2008 is complete.
