Nebraska Planning Council on
Developmental Disabilities
State and Federal Network

The federal agency entitled Administration on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AIDD) funds the Nebraska Planning Council on Developmental Disabilities, Disability Rights Nebraska, and Munroe-Meyer Institute as a part of a national network to build capacity of states and communities to respond to the needs of individuals with disabilities and their families. These three agencies work together to provide advocacy leadership at a state and federal level to interested persons in Nebraska. A description and contact information for Disability Rights Nebraska and Munroe-Meyer Institute follows.

Disability Rights Nebraska, the Center for Disability Rights, Law and Advocacy, is a private, non-profit agency that:

  • Works with people who have disabilities to secure their rights
  • Works to achieve a vision which is supportive of the ideals of interdependence, productivity, human dignity, personal integrity and full participation for individuals with disabilities in their community
  • Is Nebraska’s designated protection and advocacy (P&A) agency and independent from any governmental or service providing agency
  • Investigates incidents of abuse and neglect
  • Works to change public attitudes and increase public awareness of the legal and human rights of people with disabilities
  • May provide legal representation to protect the legal and human rights of people with disabilities through a variety of other activities including public education, information and referral, and public policy analysis

Munroe-Meyer Institute (MMI) is part of a national network of sixty-one University Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Education, Research and Services (UCEDD). University Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities are:

  • Authorized by the Developmental Disabilities Assistance and Bill of Rights Act, Public Law 106-402,42 U.S.C. 6061-6066, to build the capacity of states and communities to respond to the needs of individuals with disabilities and their families
  • Funded by the Federal Administration on Developmental Disabilities
  • Located in each state and territory of the United States
  • Committed to supporting the independence, productivity, and inclusion of individuals with developmental disabilities and their families in the community by providing interdisciplinary education, research, service and technical assistance
