History
The State of Nebraska established the Youth Rehabilitation and Treatment Center - Kearney in 1879. The facility began receiving boys and girls in July 1881. In 1892, YRTC-K became a boys-only youth facility when a girls facility opened in Geneva, Nebraska. On January 1, 1997, YRTC-K ended a 23-year affiliation with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services. YRTC-K became one of 10 24-hour facilities under the Department of Health and Human Services. YRTC-K is part of DHHS under the Division of Children and Family Services.

Professional Affiliations
The Nebraska Department of Education accredited West Kearney High School as a Special Purpose School. North Central Association of Schools & Colleges has accredited West kearney High School as an Optional School.
Involved with Performance-based Standards (PBS), a quality assurance project administered by the Council of Juvenile Correctional Administrators.
