Walking Towards Wellness Event to be Held at Capitol

Lincoln—A “Walking Towards Wellness” event will be held Friday, September 23, at 10:10 a.m. on the north steps of the State Capitol Building in Lincoln to promote wellness for people with mental and substance use disorders.

The goal of the walk is to take action to improve their quality of life and increase life expectancy by 10 years in 10 years.

People with mental or substance use disorders die decades earlier than the general population, mostly due to preventable medical conditions, such as diabetes or cardiovascular, respiratory, or infectious diseases, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

“The goal of wellness includes a future in which people with mental or substance use disorders live healthy and fulfilling lives,” said Scot L. Adams, director of the Division of Behavioral Health in the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.
