National Drug Take Back Day is October 29

Public Can Get Rid of Old, Unused Medications

Lincoln—Prescription Drug Take Back Day is an opportunity for Nebraskans to properly dispose of unused, expired and unwanted drugs that might otherwise fall into the wrong hands, according to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.

“Studies show that the majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, sometimes stolen out of the home medicine cabinet,” according to Scot L. Adams, director of the Division of Behavioral Health. “Law enforcement and substance abuse prevention coalitions, along with other community partners across the state, are sponsoring take-back events on October 29th to collect these drugs and dispose of them properly.”

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health, more than seven million Americans currently abuse prescription drugs. The Partnership for a Drug Free America reports that each day, approximately 2,500 teens use prescription drugs to get high for the first time.

“Medicines in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse,” Adams said. “The rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses.”

Flushing drugs down the toilet can contaminate the water supply. Throwing drugs in the trash may make it possible for them to fall into the wrong hands. The best way to dispose of the drugs is an official drug take-back event.

Following is a listing of places that are sponsoring collection sites. A list that is updated daily is available at http://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/drug_disposal/takeback/#poc. For specific times of collection, call the sponsoring entity.
