Veterans’ Home Employee Honored as State of Nebraska Supervisor of the Year

Tom Blacketer, Facility Maintenance Supervisor at the Eastern Nebraska Veterans’ Home in Bellevue was recently honored as a State of Nebraska Supervisor of the Year at a ceremony in the rotunda of the State Capitol in Lincoln.

Tom is a 30-year employee of ENVH and in addition to his responsibility of maintaining the 120,000 square foot facility where 117 members call home, he continually meets various federal and state regulations. Tom is very safety-minded and proactive in all aspects of the knowledge and intricacies a building the magnitude of ENVH. The morale of Tom’s maintenance team has always remained positive. The service they provide to ENVH receives positive remarks and praise from many members and their families. Tom goes above and beyond his job to ensure excellent customer relations with contractors, staff, members and their families.

In addition to being an outstanding supervisor, Tom has gone above and beyond in terms of community service by aiding in the rescue of several King Lake residents during the 2010 summer flooding. Always honored to serve the American heroes who call ENVH their home, the facility recognized Blacketer for being “a hero of his community.” He selflessly worked 15 hour days evacuating people and animals with his airboat. On a couple of occasions, he assisted the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department and the Waterloo and Valley Fire & Rescue in checking on 911 calls with his airboat as many of his King Lake neighbors were reeling under overflow from the Elkhorn River. He also transported Humane Society workers to rescue animals. In addition, Tom and his son Brandon shuttled food, water and medicine to those in need that chose to stick out the flood in their homes. Tom was recently recognized as “Citizen of the Year” by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department.

Tom is a key supervisor of our “Home Team” serving America’s Heroes and an outstanding hero of his community.
