John Hilgert is the Director of the Division of Veterans’ Homes in the Department of Health and Human Services. He was appointed by Governor Dave Heineman effective July 1, 2007 and reappointed by Governor Pete Ricketts in 2015.
John also serves as the Director of the Nebraska Department of Veterans’ Affairs. He was appointed to that position in 2001 by Governor Mike Johanns and reappointed by Governor Heineman in 2005 and by Governor Pete Ricketts in 2015.
John is a member of the Nebraska State Bar and is a graduate of the Creighton School of Law. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
He is a military veteran having served with the U.S. Army’s First Infantry Division in Operation Desert Shield/Operation Desert Storm. He was a Captain in the Army and part of the Judge Advocate General’s Corps.
John has several years of professional experience working in government relations and administration including serving six years as a Nebraska State Senator, having been elected twice to the Nebraska Legislature representing District 7.
John and his wife, Cara, live in Omaha with son, Jack, and daughter, Caroline. John enjoys spending time with his family and is involved with Scouting activities.
